Binder
Binder is a novel type of learning environment that utilizes the possibilities offered by the use of a combination of mobile phones and internet access. This tool encourages students to learn by doing and it is an inspiring option that complements the traditional forms of learning used in schools currently.
Students take observations from the given subject by using a mobile camera phone. Observations can be either in text message, photos, video clip and/or interview form. The observations are then stored automatically into the Binder internet application where students can later examine, modify and deliver them to others, under the teacher’s supervision. The collected data (i.e. observations) are especially valuable because they are created by the students themselves and are not just standard pictures in an exercise book.
Binder was developed by teachers themselves out of a growing need to incorporate innovative elements into the teaching programme. The starting point was the students’ open-minded and natural attitude towards mobile phones. It gave teachers the inspiration to utilize this potential aspect in different types of learning situations. The Binder application enables the outside environment to be brought into the classroom, where it can then be handled effectively and in a way that nurtures the student’s comprehensive learning experience.
